It’s Fantasy Football Season!

16 Aug

It’s that time of year again. Time to start thinking about fantasy football. As you may not know, I am a Detroit Lions fan. I say that proudly, even though they have been horrible for many years. Growing up, though, there was nothing like watching Barry Sanders run all over opposing defenses. It was incredible. After he left, they got bad. Really bad. Luckily, I got into fantasy football. This has kept my interest in the NFL each year, no matter how bad ‘my team’ is. It is funny how things change though, when you are a fantasy footballer watching games…here is an example of what I mean. If the Lions are winning late in the game, even if they lose on a last second TD, as long as it was a TD from Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson, I was ok with it. I know, right? But you know what, I’m cool with it.

So here are the leagues I’m in this year:

  • The Elite League – This is a league I started 7 or so years ago. It’s had pretty much the same members since the beginning when it was a 6 league team. We expanded to 8 teams a few years back. We have a travelling trophy for this league as well.
  • Play for Keeps – My first long term Keeper League. This will be my 3rd year in the league (I have the 10th pick again this year, just like last year….out of 10 teams….which is reverse order of the previous years standings). My keepers have revolved around Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub. Houston has had a great passing attack and a horrible defense, so they are usually in shoot outs a lot and it’s paid off. Hopefully their D sucks again this year, but with Wade Phillips as the new D coordinator, their D may end up being a bit better. We’ll see. We also get to keep a rookie from the previous year. Luckily, the rookie I have from last year is Jahvid Best from Detroit. I’ll have to make sure I get a good rookie again this year for next season. That’s part of the reason why I like Keeper Leagues. It’s fun to ‘think ahead’.
  • Work Free League – I used to be the commissioner of a pay league for work, but was ousted by some punk from Oklahoma. But it’s cool.
  • Mother-In-Law Auction Draft League – If you’ve never done an auction draft before, I highly recommend you try one. They are really fun. Sometimes people draft and overpay for the wrong Steve Smith and then realize it when the Steve Smith that they really wanted comes up.

I’m also in an NFL survivor league, NFL Pickem, and NCAA Pickem. If you’d like to be in any of those three, please let me know and I’ll get you the log in info.

So another busy football season is in the works. And I can’t wait!

It’s Going to be a short, long summer in Minnesota (Sports)

02 May

So, here in Minnesota, we are in the midst of a cool spring (had snow yesterday on May 1st) after the snowiest winter since I’ve been out here. Last year we were spoiled with a warm spring. We had no snow from something like Feb 26th on. A nice early start to the spring and summer. This year, not so lucky. The long range pattern looks very cool, with below normal temperatures expected to continue through the next 2-3 weeks at least. So a shorter summer than last year in terms of the weather.

But I digress…this is not supposed to be a meteorology post. This is a post on the state of Minnesota sports, particularly the Twins. They are terrible. I didn’t expect them to be great, but I also didn’t expect them to be this bad. They lost a handful of pieces from last year’s pitching staff. But injuries and the inability for replacement players to produce has created nauseating games to watch. In one of the silliest managerial decisions in some time (in my opinion) Ron Gardenhire (supposed Manager of the Year ’10), decided our fielders needed to get faster. So we didn’t try and retain JJ Hardy instead of going with Alexi Casilla (more on that later). Last year in some sort of a desperation move, the Twins traded a very good catching prospect, Wilson Ramos,  for an overrated closer on a bad team, Matt Capps. Yes, I know, we have Joe Mauer. But Joe Mauer gets hurt. We need a more than capable backup to give him rest and when he’s hurt, start. Instead we are stuck with Drew Butera and Steve Holm. Yikes. More on them later as well. Also to add to all of this, our MOY decides to make our strikeout pitcher pitch to contact….SAY WHA????

Gardenhire must have forgotten that thing on offense that fielders need to do in order for the speed to help….GET ON BASE.

So here are some tidbits from this years Twins team so far. Their ineptitude is second to none right now. Thanks to Joe for sending these stats along.

  • The Twins have scored only 82 runs this season, fewest in the AL.
  • The Twins are -67 in run differential, by far the worst in baseball. This means not only can the Twins not hit, but we can’t pitch either.
  • The Twins scored 10 runs in a game against Cleveland. That is the only time we’ve scored more than 5 runs….ALL SEASON.
  • The Twins have given up a MLB leading 10+ runs, six times.
  • Michael Cuddyer has the 3rd best Batting Average at .226.
  • The Twins lost 18 times in April, a new club record.
  • The back up catching due of Drew Butera and Steve Holm have exactly one combined hit in their last 39 ABs. Thats a batting average of 0.026. Pathetic.
  • On the flip side, Wilson Ramos, the catcher we traded to Washington, is batting 0.358, with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs.
  • The Twins are slow starters on a limited offense. They have only scored 3 total runs in the first inning of games this season.
  • The Twins have the fewest HRs in the league, at 12. The Yankees lead the league with 45 HRs.
  • As one would expect, the Twins are also last in RBIs at 78. The Reds are #1 at 143. Ridiculous.
  • Twins have the worst ERA in all of MLB at 5.06. The Oakland A’s are almost 2.5 runs better.
  • The Twins pitchers are last in strikeouts, with 152. Next closest are the Nationals at 162. San Francisco is #1 at 227.
  • Alexi Casilla, in whom Gardy trusts, is batting .190, with 4 fielding errors.
  • Oh, by the way, Trevor Plouffe, our SS in the minors is batting .297 with 7 HRs and 2 errors. Why haven’t we called him up yet? Maybe he’s not fast enough.

The overall theme of this is that they Twins are horrible. Those waiting and saying that the Twins will turn it around like they do every year will likely be disappointed. Usually the Twins play good baseball during the summer months, softening the coming pain of the Vikings, T-Wolves, and Wild. But not this year. This could be the worst Twins team in some time, making for a long summer of watching Golf, NASCAR, and tiddlywinks. Hopefully the NFL works out its issues and we have NFL in the fall. But until then…in these guys we trust…:

Check, Check…does this thing work?

27 Apr

I am so pathetic. I wish I would update this thing more often. But I’m too lazy busy with other things. Here’s what’s on my mind today….

-The NHL playoffs this year have been absolutely amazing. There have been two game 7s already, with two more to go. Last night the Canucks beat the Blackhawks in OT of a game 7. The Bruins and Canadiens have had one of the best overall series I can remember. Every game has been close, lots of hitting, lots of amazing saves by two outstanding goaltenders….and that is going to a game 7 tomorrow night. I can only hope that the 2nd round is as amazing as the 1st round has been. (By the way…for the record, I’ve got Tampa Bay in the game 7 upset tonight, and the Bruins in the Home game 7 win tomorrow)

-The weather across the southern US has been incredible. And by incredible, I mean incredibly volatile. Day after day of severe weather since the beginning of the month. Tornadoes, widespread wind damage, over a foot of rainfall in the span of a few days. There have been 800+ reports of tornadoes so far this year. Average at this time is around 400 or so. Just amazing. And before you jump to it, no, in my opinion it’s not because of ‘global warming’. But I don’t feel like getting into that right now. I’ll save that for a different day. :D

-Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters – This game is ridiculously good, IMO. The graphics. The gameplay. THE MASTERS! Look for a full review in the very near future.

Well….that’s all for now. Follow me on twitter! (http://twitter.com/#!/Storm_Jr)

Ryder Cup Photograph Captures Ball Before Impact

04 Oct

Check this photo out. This was taken yesterday at the Ryder Cup. Tiger Woods mishit his chip shot out of the rough and straight at a camera man. That camera man then took the picture below. Amazing.

There are multiple things that stand out in this picture.

  • The ball is right in the middle right before it makes impact with the camera
  • Tiger Woods and his caddy looking at what seems is straight at the camera
  • The stoic gallery
  • And looking at the right side of the front row of the gallery…WHAT IS THAT! A crazy looking dude in a turban/wig, smoking a cigar, with a big smile on his face and one hell of a mustache. Love it.

St Cloud State Mens Hockey

27 Mar

The most succesful season in SCSU Men’s Hockey is over. No, we didn’t win the league, we finished third. No, we didn’t have the most wins in school history, I think we had around 20. No, we didn’t win the WCHA Playoffs, although we did get to the finals.

Here is what we did do that made it the most succesful season in SCSU Men’s Hockey ever: WE WON A NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME!!!

Yes, that does make it sound like I have low standards. But SCSU has never won a NCAA game before Friday. We were 0-8 all time.

So even thought they lost tonight to Wisconsin, I think it was the most successful season we’ve ever had.

#3 Wisconsin Defeats #4 St. Cloud State, 7-4

22 Feb

Well…I was right with the split part….but mixed up the days! Too bad for the Huskies, a sweep would have been nice!

Madison, Wis. – The #4 St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team (20-10-4, 15-8-3 WCHA) suffered a tough 7-4 loss at #3 University of Wisconsin (19-8-4, 14-7-3 WCHA) on Saturday, Feb. 20, in a game played before a sellout crowd of 15,237 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
The Huskies jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the game with a tally by junior forward Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.) at 1:10 of the first period.  Sophomore forward Travis Novak (Lethbridge, Alberta) had the lone assist on the play.
Wisconsin tied the game at 6:36 of the first period with a power play goal by Mike Davies.  The two squads battle to a draw for the better part of the first period, before the Badgers gained a 2-1 lead at 18:58 as Brendan Smith scored a power play goal with assists from Justin Schultz and Derek Stepan.
In the second period, UW’s pushed its lead to 3-1 with a goal by Stepan at 8:12.  SCSU got back into the mix with an even strength goal by sophomore defender Oliver Lauridsen (Gentofte, Denmark) at 19:14.  He was assisted on the play by Roe and senior forward Ryan Lasch (Lake Forest, Calif.).
The Badgers’ Ben Street then made it 4-2 with :01 left in the second period, as he nabbed a long pass from Davies and scored on a last second breakaway past SCSU netminder Mike Lee (Roseau).  Stepan had the second assist on the play.
The offense really got rolling in the third period, as a total of five goals were scored.  SCSU junior forward Aaron Marvin (Warroad) made the score 4-3 with an even-strength goal at 8:15 of the third.  Lasch and freshman Taylor Johnson (Hugo) had assists on the play, which ended with Marvin pushing home the loose puck after the intitial scoring attempt by Lasch.
UW made it 5-3 with a marker by Jordy Murray at 11:35, before the SCSU sophomore forward Drew LeBlanc (Hermantown) made it 5-4 with his fifth goal of the season at 11:54.  Freshman forward Ben Hanowski (Little Falls) and sophomore defender Sam Zabkowicz (Greendale, Wis.) each had assists on the goal.
The Badgers went on to ice the contest with late period goals in the third period by Andy Bohmbach at 14:51 and Aaron Bendickson at 16:33, which made the final score 7-4.
In the game, UW outshot the Huskies 50-23.  On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-6 and Wisconsin was 2-of-8.  Lee made a career-high 43 saves in the game, while Scott Gudmandson had 19 saves for the Badgers.
SCSU will have off next week, as the Huskies prepare for the final regular season games of the season on March 5-6.  SCSU will travel to Minnesota State on March 5, and the Huskies will complete the home-home series on March 6 with a 7:07 p.m. game at the NHC against Minnesota State.  This game will mark Senior Night at SCSU.
The weekend split at Wisconsin also insured the Huskies of home ice in the upcoming first round of the WCHA Play-offs on March 12-14.  The best of three series will be held at the NHC, and the Huskies’ first round opponent will be determined by the outcome of the remaining league games.
For complete information about tickets for the Minnesota State game or the upcoming WCHA playoffs, please call 1-877-SCSUTIX or 320-308-2137.
HUSKY HOCKEY NOTES: Ryan Lasch broke a team record on Feb. 20, as he played in his 152nd career game with the Huskies.  He surpasses the old mark of 151 games, which was set by Taj Melson.  Lasch also moved into second place in the career scoring charts ahead of Tim Hanus (1988-92).  Lasch now has 173 career points (76g/97a) and needs five more points this season to tie the all-time scoring record of 179 points set by Jeff Saterdalen from 1988-92…this marks the 8th season that SCSU has charted 20+ wins since moving to the DI level in 1987-88…SCSU is currently tied for 4th in the Pairwise Rankings on Feb. 20.

#4 St. Cloud State Huskies @ #3 Wisconsin Badgers – Men’s Hockey

19 Feb

#4 SCSU @ #3 Wisconsin Friday and Saturday nights at 7:05pm Central Time

HUGE weekend for SCSU Men’s hockey. SCSU sits in 2nd place right now, only 1 point out of first and only 2 points up on Wisconsin. Also, SCSU has played 2 more league games than anyone else in the WCHA (except for UAA, but they dont count :p ), so these points are important. Also, SCSU sits in 4th position in the all important Pairwise rankings, a BCS-like ratings system that mimics the selection of the 16 teams that will participate in the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament.

But there is one problem…it seems like SCSU never wins in Madison.  Anything less than a sweep and the Huskies can kiss their dreams of a regular season championship goodbye. I can’t remember the last time we swept Wisconsin at Madison…if we’ve ever done it. That being said, I would be more than happy with a split, keeping us in the drivers seat for a top 3 finish and more importantly if we would win our first round playoff games in the WCHA playoffs, then we would be guaranteed to NOT play in the play-in game.

And a split is what I’m predicting. I think SCSU will have a bit of a letdown after the shellacking UND gave them last Saturday (8-1 loss at home…ouch!) and lose tonight. Something like 4-1 or 4-2. But then come out on fire tomorrow night and win 5-2.

Go Huskies!

Michigan Football is 2-0…Wait, what?

18 Sep

So, after watching Michigan play the last few weeks I am amazed. Not only amazed at the team as a whole, but my forciergoodness is Tate Forcier a BEAST. He’s fast, he’s making great decisions, and he can throw…AND HE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL LAST YEAR. Now, it’s only been a few weeks, but the future of Michigan Football is in great hands if he stays.

His defining moment in last weeks game was the drive to win it against Notre Dame. There were less than 2 minutes left in the game. Michigan had just given up an 11 point lead. All Tate Forcier has to do is lead Michigan 80 yds, in less than 2 minutes, in front of 100,000+ screaming fans, against one of Michigan’s biggest rivals. And he did it. He freaking did it. I haven’t been this excited for a game in who knows how long. And now, Michigan has a legitimate chance at being 4-0.

This Saturday, Michigan is back at the Big House playing against one of the worst teams in NCAA D-1 football, Eastern Michigan. I’m not saying this will be a walkover, Michigan is notorious for playing down to the competition. So that 25 point spread in favor of Michigan? Put it all on Eastern Michigan and let it ride.

Prediction: Michigan carves up the Eastern Michigan Defense, but Michigan’s D (which has some issues) still allows Eastern to keep it closer than it should be.

Michigan 30 Eastern Michigan 17

NHL Conference Semi-Finals Analysis: Detroit Red Wings vs. Anaheim Ducks

01 May

Well, here we go. Ducks vs. my Red Wings. Man I can’t stand the Ducks. They’ve always been kind of like that annoying little brother (sorry dave!). They’re not my most hated team…in fact, now that I think about it, I really don’t have a singular most hated NHL team. It used to be the Avs for good reason…Claude Lemieux

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W-JXDu1X-I

But now I just have a group of hated teams…the Penguins are one of them…Primarily for Sidney Crosby, biggest whiner in the league…Check out this most accurate representation of Sidney the flopper in NHL 08…lol

The Ducks are another…stemming from a fight a few years ago where Chris Kunitz pulled Brent Burns’ hair during a fight…

So anyways…on to the quick analysis

The Wings have a LOT more scoring talent than Anaheim. Their defenses are a wash…so that leaves one thing, goaltending. Which Osgood are we going to get? The normal Playoff Osgood who plays lights out like in games 1-3…or the regular season Osgood and game 4 Osgood who looks hurt and can’t stop anything? On the flip side, will Jonas Hiller play up to the competition like he did against San Jose? Or where most of those shots just not high quality by San Jose? I’m going to lean Red Wings in this one. I just think our Offense will put better shots on net and test Hiller more than San Jose did. I also think that our speed on offense will be able to neutralize the defense of Anaheim.

I’m taking the Wings in 5.
